Kick Diabetes Essentials

The Diet and Lifestyle Guide—A Diet and Lifestyle Blueprint
by Brenda Davis, RD

Kick Diabetes EssentialsThis book is not just for anyone with diabetes.  It contains all the perfect recommendations for anyone with cancer, heart disease, or any other chronic illness.  The following is taken from the back of the book:

Research shows that following a plant-based diet not only can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes but, can also reverse the disease.  Brenda Davis (Registered Dietician) deciphers the latest scientific evidence and explains why and how a whole-food, plant0focused diet can benefit anyone with this devastating disease.

Well-designed plant-based diets work because they address the root causes of diabetes.  They maximize powerful protective dietary components that are concentrated in plant foods and work together to ease inflammation and oxidative stress, stabilize blood glucose levels, enhance gut micro flora, and keep blood pressure and cholesterol in check.  At the same time, plant-based diets minimize the harmful components concentrated in highly processed foods and animal products.

Lifestyle adjustments in conjunction with improved dietary habits are essential for achieving and maintaining diabetes health goals.  Stress management, exercise, adequate sleep, social activity, and a healthy weight all contribute to a balanced trinity of physical fitness, mental clarity, and emotional stability.

“Kick Diabetes Essentials is a gold mind for people with diabetes.  It is packed with solid scientific evidence, practical guidelines, and carefully constructed recipes.  Brenda Davis is my favourite go-to-dietitian.  You can rest assured that you are in very capable hands.” — Michael Greger, MS (How Not To Die)

You Can Heal Your Life

"The thoughts we think and the words we speak create our experiences."

by Louise Hay

You Can Heal Your LifeI have had this book in my library since it was first published in 1999 and I have referred to it many, many times over the years for inspiration, insights and motivation.

Louise's key message in this powerful book is: "If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed."  She explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness.  She shows how you can change your thinking—and improve the quality of your life!

Louise Hay nailed it in this book.  She has covered everything in beautifully coloured and illustrated pages.  Chapter 15 is list taken from her book “Heal Your Body” which is a great quick check in on the body part that is causing pain, grief, irritation.  The insights guide the reader to delve deeper into their own story to help unravel the mystery of what the body is saying.

Louise explains how our beliefs, ideals and ideas are often the cause of our illness.  This book shows you how to change your thinking and improve the quality of your life.

An absolute must for anyone wanting to bring consciousness into their way of life.  Thank you Louise for this book, an amazing legacy.

The Anatomy of Hope

How People Prevail in the Face of Illness

by Jerome Groopman, M.D.

Anatomy of HopeThe author is a doctor of oncology/hematology with over 30 years experience.  He is definitely well versed in mainstream cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation) and maintenance support drugs.  He also has extensive experience and knowledge related to research which he goes into extensively throughout the book to validate is conclusions.

Throughout this book, the author gives references to numerous case studies as he explores why some people survive serious illnesses which lead him to study the deeper concepts of “hope” and define false hope vs. true hope.  He connects with other researchers throughout the book.

Building on his own personal experience with a debilitating illness, he comes closer to understanding the meaning of “hope” and relates it back to many of his case studies.

In his own words: “Hope…is vital to our lives as the very oxygen that we breathe. … The question—why some people find and hold on to hope while others do not—was what moved me to write this book.”

I would recommend this book for all medical professionals as it will help one to understand how to talk and treat their patients incorporating the many languages of “hope”.

Neuropathy

How to Relieve Foot Numbness, Tingling, Burning and Cramping without Drugs or Surgery

by Dr. Philip A. Straw

In this book, Dr. Philip Straw outlines how to relieve foot numbness, tingling, burning, and cramping without drugs or surgery.

Years of experience he points out the many reasons for a patient to present with symptoms of neuropathy.  He lists the symptoms and causes of neuropathy especially in the feet with a focus on cause originating mostly from diabetes, poor diet and lifestyle habits.

In the second half of this book, Dr. Straw, presents his Optimal Health Plan which lists his recommendations for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  He backs up his health plan with a number of success stories.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is suffering from neuropathy or knows someone who is.  This book will help you to understand the causes of neuropathy and supplements and alternative health practices that can be introduced into your lifestyle to help you better deal with the pain, stiffness and disability associated with neuropathy.

Outside the Box – Cancer Therapies

Alternative Therapies that  Treat and Prevent Cancer

by Dr. Mark Stengler & Dr. Paul Anderson

This is a wonderful reference book for anyone looking for recommendations for supplements and alternative treatments that will either compliment or contradict cancer treatments.  There is very little reference to the various types of cancers and specific cancer treatments.  It focuses on basic mainstream chemotherapy treatments using as it calls “toxic” in many places throughout the book.

This book goes into each supplement in detail and how it compliments cancer treatments, side effects and long term use.  Very informative.  The index at the back of the book is very helpful for quick research.

The book mentions a number of alternative treatments, but gives a very basic overview of each one; however, it does outline which of these treatments work best for specific cancers, which I found helpful.

The Shocking Truth About Cancer: Fix Your Diet & Lifestyle To Starve It For Longevity | Thomas Seyfried

When I started medical school in 1995, we were taught that one in four people were likely to develop cancer in their lifetime. Today, that statistic has changed to one in two – a rapid rise that can’t be explained by genetics. But if our modern diet and lifestyles are the cause, we have more control than we might think. That’s the message my guest, Professor Thomas Seyfried, has worked tirelessly to prove and communicate over his four decades as a cancer researcher. Professor Seyfried is a professor of biology, genetics and biochemistry at Boston College, Massachusetts, and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, as well as the 2012 book Cancer As A Metabolic Disease. Through his research, and in this conversation, he sets out to explain how it’s a malfunction in our mitochondria – the energy powerhouses in each of our cells – that’s at the root of every cancer he’s studied.

Normal-functioning mitochondria, he explains, use oxygen to make energy. In cancer, this process is disrupted. Cancer cells cannot use oxygen, so they fall back on a primitive form of energy creation known as fermentation. It follows then, explains Professor Seyfried, that if we can somehow stop this fermentation process, then cancer cells will die.

Cancer uses glucose and glutamine to fuel fermentation. While we don’t want to block glutamine, as it has other uses in the body, we can drastically lower our glucose levels to stop driving cancer growth. We discuss some of the ways in which we can start doing this – for example, using specific low-carb diets and nutritional ketosis. Professor Seyfried also talks us through his ground-breaking ‘metabolic therapy’ protocols for treating cancer – sometimes, alongside conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Professor Seyfried has spent decades researching and proving a metabolic cause for this devastating disease. This a compelling and optimistic conversation, packed with actions we can all take to reduce our risk not just of cancer, but all the chronic conditions driven by metabolic disruption.

CAUTION: This podcast discusses ketogenic diets and water-only fasting. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before making any drastic changes to your diet or before going for prolonged periods without eating.
